Are CBD and THC the same thing?

Are CBD and THC the same thing? No. Absolutely not. While there is a lot of crossover in their benefits and sources, there are definite differences in side effects and legality.

What is THC?

Tetrahydrocannabidioil, also known as THC, is the primary cannabinoid of the marijuana plant. The marijuana plant is a species of the cannabis Sativa plant -- just like its brother the hemp plant.

THC has psychoactive properties that lead to that "high" feeling. THC interacts with the CB1 endocannabinoid receptors in the brain to cause the feeling of high.

Meanwhile, CBD does NOT get a person high. While TCH and CBD are both cannabinoids of the Cannabis sativa plant, THC is the main cannabinoid of the marijuana plant while CBD is the main cannabinoid of the hemp plant.

Is THC legal?

Globally there are only two countries that have fully legalized marijuana. In 2013, Uruguay became the first state to make marijuana legal. More key adjustments followed suit in 2014 allowing citizens to plant a maximum of 6 plants.

In 2018, Canada joined Uruguay allowing one to possess a maximum of 30 grams of kush. The legal age to purchase and consume marijuana is 19 in most Canadian provinces. However, in Alberta, the legal age is 18, and Quebec raised the minimum age to 21.

In the United States, the use and possession of cannabis is federally illegal under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. At the state level, however, policies regarding medical and recreational use vary greatly. Be sure to research your local state laws.

CBD, however, has increased in popularity as research began to show the upsides of the compound and its numerous benefits.

In the 2014 Farm Bill, CBD products containing under 0.3% THC and is derived from industrial hemp become federally legal in the United States. In 2018, the Farm Bill introduced new USDA rules and standards for growing and extracting hemp-derived CBD oil. It also removed industrial hemp from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) list of controlled substances.
